Description
On 11th March 2013 York Archaeological Trust undertook a watching brief on land between Lord Mayors Walk and St Maurice’s Court, York. The objective was to record any deposits, features or buried structures exposed during works associated with the excavation of a shallow trench across the area for a new fibre optic cable connecting a junction box in the pavement along the south-eastern end of Lord Mayors Walk to one in the southern angle of Monk Bar car park, situated immediately north of St Maurice’s Court. Initially the work consisted of the excavation by hand of four trial holes, each nominally 0.3m by 0.3m by 0.3m, and to be followed by the digging of the cable trench. The site lies within the City of York Central Area of Archaeological Importance and runs across the site of a medieval and post-medieval cemetery belonging to the church of St Maurice, demolished in the 19th century but replaced with a larger structure located in the angle between Lord Mayors Walk and Monkgate. Recording was by means of written notes and measured sketches supplemented by a number of colour digital photographs. The four trial holes were recorded and are described below. No further recording was undertaken.
