Description

Between 20th February and 22nd February 2013 York Archaeological Trust undertook a watching brief during works in Bootham Row and Bootham Square, York. The objective was to record any deposits, features or buried structures exposed during the connection of a new power cable to a new sub-station within the grounds of Bootham School. Originally planned to be a continuous trench from Bootham Row to the school entrance the known concentration of services in the vicinity of the proposed route led to most of the cable being laid using a remote controlled drill. Three entry holes had to be dug for the drill and all three were monitored. The site lies within the City of York Central Area of Archaeological Importance and within an area which has yielded remains of the Roman period and later. Recording was by means of written notes and measured sketches supplemented by a number of colour digital photographs. Three representative sections were recorded and are described below.
