Description

On 6th February 2013 York Archaeological Trust undertook a watching brief during works at the front of 84 Gillygate, York. The objective was to record any deposits, features or buried structures exposed during the excavation of a trench for the insertion of a new single front wall to the property. The site lies within the City of York Central Area of Archaeological Importance and just outside the City Walls between Bootham Bar and Monk Bar. A clean dark deposit at the base of the trench appears to be undisturbed and in-situ. Its function is uncertain but it may indicate that archaeological remains may survive relatively intact in the vicinity and include structural remains of medieval and later date.
