Description

On 23rd January 2013 York Archaeological Trust undertook a watching brief during works at the top of the ramp leading from Museum Street to the boatyard by the River Ouse in York. The objective was to record any deposits, features or buried structures exposed during the excavation of a trench to locate a faulty supply cable for a lighting column The trench failed to locate the cable and so a second trench was dug immediately adjacent to the lighting column in order to locate the cable but this was not recorded in detail since it was virtually the same as the first trench. The site lies within the City of York Central Area of Archaeological Importance and immediately adjacent to the Museum Gardens Scheduled Ancient Monument. Recording was by means of written notes and measured sketches supplemented by a number of colour digital photographs. A single representative section was recorded and is described below.
