Between 13th and 19th January 2012 York Archaeological Trust undertook a watching on works close to the junction of St Helen’s Square and Lendal, York. The objective was to record any deposits, features or buried structures exposed during the excavation of a trench to demolish an existing manhole and to install a new one. The trench was visited on a regular, daily, basis until the actual excavation work had been completed Recording was by means of written notes and measured sketches supplemented by a number of colour digital photographs. A single representative section was recorded and is described below.
