Description

A watching brief was undertaken within the rear grounds of 28 Marygate, York by OSA in November-December 2001, during the excavation of foundation trenches in advance of an extension to the existing building. The foundation trenches were a maximum of 1.20m deep. The earliest deposit encountered during the course of the construction works occurred at a depth of 1.10m, and was interpreted as a phase of medieval dumping. This was cut by a small portion of brick wall, or probably 16th or 17th century date.
