Description

The ground within the area of the test pits was shown to comprise of primarily late-post medieval levelling deposits, including brick, mortar, stone and tile, which are likely to be associated with the construction, use and alteration of 1-9 St Leonard’s Place and associated buildings to their rear, from the early 19th century onwards. These pits also contained sherds of residual Roman and medieval pottery, together with occasional pieces of animal bone and clay pipe. A single section of in situ stone wall was identified in Test Pit TP04 at the western end of the garden of no. 7 St Leonard’s Place. This is situated at a depth of approximately 0.5m below the present ground surface and is constructed of magnesian limestone blocks measuring up to 0.25m x 0.25m, with fragments of tile, and is approximately 0.4m wide. It is aligned on an approximately south-east to north-west alignment, an orientation that does not correspond with any of the existing structures or boundaries on the site, and it may be of a possible medieval or Roman date.
