Description

Preliminary statement on an archaeological evaluation and monitoring undertaken by Field Archaeology Specialists Ltd on the site of the Britannia Car Park, Heworth Green, York, carried out between the 22nd November and the 8th December 2000. This phase of monitoring and evaluation succeeded in defining at least one area of well preserved and significant archaeological deposits on the site. This area is limited to a 20m wide zone at the front of the car park which corresponds with the expected location of the medieval hospital of St. Leonards. The remainder of the site has been subject to a number factors which make the survival of later archaeological deposits unlikely as well as inaccessible for safe further investigation.
