Description

YAT undertook an excavation of the findspot of a sword pommel at 3 Hessay Place York. The excavation was limited by a grarden path at one side, a greenhouse on another, th garden fence on the third side and a compost heap to the fourth. The reported find spot was straddled. 70cms of topsoil containing only modern material was removed in an area mesuring 1.55m x 0.7m, exposing a thin compacted layerwhihc is probably to be associated with the construction of the house. Below this was a further 10cms of soil covering a natural deposit undisturbed except for a 20th century pit at one corner. There was no trace of remnants of the sword or any feature with which it might have been associated. NMR Information: Accession code: 1983.36. No additional description provided.
