Description

York Archaeological Trust (YAT) observed two phases of underpinning works carried out at the Mansion House. The first of these was undertaken between 15th February and 1st March 2016 with the second part from 18th - 25th of July 2016. A watching brief was also carried out intermittently between these dates as and when necessary. The work was undertaken for City of York Council in relation to planning application AOD/15/00234. The work recorded archaeological deposits revealed during excavations for underpinning within the cellar of the building. Archaeology revealed during the works was primarily linked with the foundations of the standing 18th century building, and in the case of Trench 3 to a sequence of road surfaces and make-up of Roman date. There was limited evidence of early medieval activity in the form of a possible pit and a small number of residual finds which indicate activity pre-dating the 18th century standing building.
