Description

Two watching briefs on ground works for the installation of a two way link box by Northern Powergrid on the 9th and 12th March. These consisted of two separate operation notices at 18-19 Feasegate and St Sampson’s Square/Feasegate. At 18-19 Feasegate 18003 a brick vault was encountered at 0.3m bgl. Above this a bedding and concrete deposit for the present ground surface was found. Due to the presence of the brick vault operations were curtailed. At St Sampson’s Square/Feasegate the earliest deposit exposed consisted of a friable, mid grey, clayey silt at 0.6m bgl. This could be a build-up deposit or backfill associated with the electric services found during the works. Due to the limited width of the trench further interpretation was not possible. No significant archaeological deposits, structures or artefacts were encountered during the course of the watching brief.
