Description

A new sporting facility is proposed at Millthorpe School, York. It would involve the construction of a 3G sports pitch with associated lighting, fencing and parking. Based on the geophysical results three test pits were positioned in order to determine the absence or presence of any significant archaeological deposits. Pits 2 and 3 were located to test geophysical anomalies with Pit 1 sited where no anomloies were encountered (Lyall, 2018). The results of the evaluation confirmed that significant archaeological deposits were not present. The stratigraphy of the site consists of two deposits; one a dark brown 19th to 20th century layer of made up ground positioned above the natural clay deposit and the second is a layer of turf. The test pits also verified that the geophysical anomalies consisted of land drains and natural features.
