Description
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken by On-Site Archaeology Ltd at the former Thomas Dick Ltd site, Hallfield Road, York during groundwork associated with the erection of a three storey residential building.
The site lies in an area with the potential to contained scatted burials of Romano-British date and evidence for medieval agricultural landuse. The new building is to be constructed using piled foundations. The watching brief was therefore carried out following initial site clearance during excavations required for the installation of new drainage. The watching brief only revealed 20th century deposits and structures. A review of borehole data indicates that the site overlies between 2.50 and 4.50m of modern made ground. The watching brief has confirmed the character and date of these made ground deposits and it is considered highly unlikely that any earlier deposits survive.
