Description

An archaeological investigation was undertaken by On-Site Archaeology Ltd during conversion of a single storey out-building into a one bedroom flat to the rear of 23 Fossgate, York. Prior to the redevelopment a small archaeological trail trench was excavated by On-Site Archaeology Ltd (January 2019) to investigate the nature of deposits beneath the existing concrete floor. The evaluation identified a northwest to southeast aligned limestone and red brick foundation, butted by a possible late/post-medieval levelling deposits and sealed by the red brick floor of probable early modern date. The archaeological watching brief revealed a number of earlier structures that pre-date the out-building that is shown on the 1st Edition Ordnance Survey map of 1852. The earliest features included limestone foundations and levelling of a possible late medieval or early post-medieval date. Later phases included a probable red brick oven and boiler, followed by construction of a red brick foundation and hard-standing yard surface. The latest phase was a brick flooring and sandstone paving associated with an earlier configuration of the outbuilding.
