Description
The watching brief incorporated the monitoring of a number of service trenches along with the foundation trenches of several new structures associated with the conversion of two extant buildings to residential use and the construction of two new dwellings. No archaeological deposits or features were recorded within any of the trenching. Excavation at the front of the site in the northeastern corner of the front courtyard revealed the presence of a late (18th or 19th century) horticultural layer directly above the natural sand. It would seem that early deposits were landscaped away at that time and this process significantly truncated the medieval and any earlier stratigraphy.
