Description

Evaluation of nine trenches. A number of archaeological features of Roman date recorded. These were exclusively in northern part of the site. The other areas, including Area B were characterised by a garden soil which sealed a medieval ploughsoil covering the natural subsoil. Area A (St Oswald's Road) In summary the evaluation recorded a number of ditches, pits and postholes in Area A that followed a general east west alignment and dated largely to the 1st and 2nd century AD. Features of a later Roman date were also present but in less quantity. The nature of the activity is not clear from the evaluation. While the ditches indicate the division of land or property, the presence of pits and postholes could relate to domestic or industrial activity on the site. The archaeological deposits are situated at a depth of between 0.6m and 0.8m below current ground level. Area B (south and west of Bowling Green) Characterised by a series of fluvial deposits and ploughsoil sealing the natural clay subsoil. No archaeological features were recorded in any of the trenches.
