Description

Modern activity had disturbed the uppermost archaeological deposits in the area but the clean loam in Trench 2 appeared to be an in-situ deposit. Its clean nature suggests that it is garden-type soil although the very limited size of the trench makes this uncertain. No finds of any type were recovered from this site so the deposit must remain undated although it most likely dated to the Mediaeval or Post-Mediaeval period. Whilst the standing building appeared to be modern it did incorporate timberwork apparently earlier than the modern brickwork suggesting that an earlier structure survives on the site at a lower level with the clean loam observed being an internal dump to raise the floor level. This may be supported by the fact that although the site is set well back from Goodramgate it does front onto one of the narrow alleyways of probable Mediaeval date which are common in this and other parts of the city centre. Any future work on this site would merit further archaeological observations. RCHME Microfilm Index PRN: 6365. Site code: P0368. Exact trench locations unknown. NMR sources: Evans D/1996/49 Goodramgate, York (Accession Code PO 368).
