Description

Excavation within a sewer trench recorded demolition rubble from fortress buildings at a depth of c.2.70m, sealed by a probable late Roman stony surface and wattle fence and sub-Roman dark earth. The Goodramgate watching brief is of considerable importance for the history of the Roman Fortress in the post-Roman period and for establishing the origin of a street thought to be of Anglo-Scandinavian origin. Unfortunately a lack of dating evidence hampered interpretation of the sequence which must rely heavily on comparison with other, dated, sequences in the area.
