Description
Excavation in 1981 ahead of construction of building. A 3m section through the Castle ditch was excavated. This revealed a possible early V shaped ditch replaced by a wider, flat bottomed ditch 24m wide, 5m deep.
The ditch ran on a NE-SW line and confirmed that the castle had a double bailey.
Several inhumations were also revealed during these works. A late Medieval date was provisionally given to those burials as they were cut into a medieval pit and were within the boundaries of the former Fransican Friary.
A small group of samples of sediment, and residues from bulk-sieving, from excavations in 1981 at 1-2 Tower Street were assessed for their content of biological remains and consequent value for archaeological interpretation in 1995.
Many of the samples proved to contain at least small numbers of well preserved plant and animal remains.
