Description

Monitoring of drainage groundworks recorded graves in situ to the east of the east wall of the south transept of St Mary's Abbey. At 0.70m BGL the skeletal remains of the lower half of a human leg were encountered. A Fibia and Tibia were excavated but not removed. From the way the bones were laid out it seems likely that the burial was in its original grave cut and not redeposited in building backfill. The rest of the excavation was limited to the east of the burial and no other disturbance was made around the skeleton. The fill between the skeleton and the Tempast Anderson Hall produced a disarticulated Femur and one bone which was only partially exposed and was not removed for inspection.
