Description

Monitoring of trenches excavated for utility upgrading recorded a 19th century cobbled road surface in section. The cobbles recorded are almost certainly remnants of a previous road surface, there is photographic evidence from the online photographic archive “Imagine York” (ref y9-ogl-28) that Ogleforth was previously cobbled, certainly into the late 19th century, although it is known clear when it was resurfaced in tarmac. It is clear that no archaeological remains of any note were damaged or destroyed during these works. Evans D T/2009/Utility Trench, Ogleforth to Goodramgate, York: archaeological watching brief.
