Description

Six test pits and one borehole were observed and recorded during the watching brief. The test pits and borehole were required to provide information for the work on the conservation of the standing buildings which have evidence for structural movement. The archaeological watching brief recorded in-situ archaeological deposits, with evidence for waterlogging and organic preservation dating from at least the 12th century. A significant stone wall recorded to the rear of the property may be associated with the stone wall evident in the cellar of Herbert House and may indicate the presence of a substantial boundary wall. Tentative evidence was recorded for activity predating the present range of buildings as well as evidence that relates directly to the extant buildings.
