Description

Between the 10th December and the 16th December 2020 York Archaeological Trust conducted an archaeological watching brief at York Railway Station. The work was undertaken for AHR Building Consultancy to fulfil the requirements of an Operations Notice submitted to City of York Council. The works involved the monitoring and recording of intrusive groundworks associated with wall foundations and accessing existing below ground services. A watching brief was maintained on two trenches in a new First Class Lounge located within York Railway Station. The first trench was dug for a steelwork footing and exposed in situ human remains probably of Roman date. The second trench was dug in order to access an existing drain; here, disarticulated human remains were found in the drain backfill while a possible grave was observed in section.
