Description

The investigation comprised the archaeological monitoring of a series of small trenches, excavated for services and prior to the lowering of the floors within the outbuildings. No archaeological features, deposits or artefacts were encountered during the archaeological investigation. Trench 1 has demonstrated that the natural lies at a depth of c. 0.80m below the modern ground surface and it is directly overlain by horticultural soil. Any medieval or earlier archaeological features are therefore most likely to comprise cuts into the natural. Trenches 2 and 3 have shown that the maximum level of intended ground reduction within the interior of the buildings would still sit within the topsoil horizon, at least 300mm above the level of natural and any surviving archaeology. Following discussions with the City of York Council Archaeologist, it was agreed that the watching brief should be curtailed.
