Description
Between the 31st March and the 1st April 2021 York Archaeological Trust conducted the first phase of evaluation at York Community Woodland, Knapton.
The work involved the excavation and recording of four evaluation trenches. Trench 2 contained a possible post-medieval/modern drainage ditch, whilst furrows were found in trench 3 and 4 and field drains in trenches 1 and 3.
Between 6th-8th September five further trenches were excavated in areas which were unavailable earlier in the year. Trenches 3, 4 and 5 were placed to investigate anomalies noted by geophysical survey. Excavation shows these anomalies to be of probable geological origins. Occasional medium-sized fragments of CBM, and post-medieval and modern pottery was found in the plough soil around the trenches. No significant archaeological finds, features or deposits were found.
