Description

An archaeological watching brief was undertaken by On-Site Archaeology Ltd at the Church of St. Giles, Skelton, during the installation of a new drainage system on the north and east sides of the church. The earliest deposit encountered during the excavation of the new drainage trench was a graveyard soil that was sealed by a levelling deposit from which a pottery sherd of a 14th to 16th century date was recovered along with late medieval or post-medieval tile fragments. It was uncertain whether or not the levelling deposit was a deliberate late medieval activity or imported from a disturbed medieval context elsewhere and re-deposited at a later period in time. No burials were disturbed during the excavation of the new drainage trench.
