Description

An archaeological watching brief was undertaken by On-Site Archaeology Ltd during the excavation of a temporary road crossing service trench and a manhole trench adjacent to Foss Bank, York in January 2022. The watching brief was commissioned as the site lies within the York Central Area of Archaeological Importance close to the medieval Jewish burial ground at Jewbury. No significant archaeological deposits or finds were revealed during the watching brief. However, the presence of a large assemblage of broken clay tobacco pipes within a dump layer suggests that a production site was located in the vicinity. Assessment of the clay pipes suggests the producer was Abraham Boyes (York, 1645 - 1681).
