Description

Watching brief during sewer repairs in the centre of Tanner Row outside no39. The trench was 3m square and reached a depth of 3.4m to c.11.50m AOD. The sewer was tunnelled through the earliest deposits which were a series of sandy clays 1.4m thick containing some cobble and pebbles. The upper surface of the clays were disturbed and may have been truncated before the deposition of a layer of 0.44m thickness of limsteone fragments mixed with white mortar and sandy loam. These layers were sealed by brown sandy loam. The sequence was difficult to interpret. Presumed Roman in date. Possible terrace make-up but exact nature and significance unknown. (YAT Roman York 4/2).
