Description

No remains pertaining to the medieval church of St Mary were recorded. The only archaeological features encountered were of 18th / 19th century date or later. A large stone structure was identified. Its construction materials suggest it was built during the 18th or 19th centuries. The function of the structure is unclear. Once it had ceased to function the structure was backfilled with material containing residues from bronze metal casting. This suggests that metal casting was taking place in the vicinity of the site but there was no evidence of such activity on the site itself. In addition, the clay extraction pit identified during the evaluation was relocated and brick footings thought to belong to a row of late 19th century terraced houses were also recorded.
