Description

An archaeological evaluation was carried out by On-Site-Archaeology Ltd at 22 Toft Green, York. The evaluation comprised the excavation of two trenches, that were positioned to test the results of a previous borehole survey of the site. The trenching revealed a complex sequence of archaeological deposits, predominantly of Roman date, including evidence for buildings and a cobble/rubble surface. The surface may represent a courtyard associated with the buildings, or form part of the colonia road network. The Roman structures were dated to between the mid 2nd to late 3rd century AD. In one of the trenches the Roman structures were sealed by a soil horizon apparently marking a period of abandonment in the late 4th century. This deposit was cut by an oven and large pit, likely to be of medieval date. The Roman and medieval features were sealed by a layer of homogenous soil, interpreted as resulting from horticultural activity in the post-medieval to early modern period. This soil horizon was between 0.50m and 0.60m thick and was directly overlain by 20th century surfacing associated with the current building.
