Description
Watching brief on works to 31 Coney St.
Structural framing of early 17th century house survive for the most part. At the time of recording (1980) a Victorian range survived while on first and second floors original fireplaces remained. High quality original plasterwork was also noted which has been seen in properties in Low Petergate (56) and Stonegate (60). This indicates that prior to the Civil War a high class firm of plasterers were at work in the city ornamenting the houses of wealthy merchants and officials.
Later alterations include the rebuilding of the attic c.1800 and the provision of two staircases in the rear of the building c.1720 and a little later.
