Description

An archaeological evaluation was carried out by On-Site-Archaeology Ltd at 3-5 Toft Green comprising the excavation of two trenches. The trenches were both excavated to a depth of c. 2m below the existing floor surfaces. One of the trenches was located close to the Toft Green frontage and the other further back from the frontage in the centre of the site. The trenching revealed a relatively simple sequence of archaeological deposits, predominantly of medieval date. Within the trench closest to the street frontage the sequence comprised a series of homogenous soil horizons. These contained medieval pottery down to a depth in excess of 1m below the existing floor. The lowest excavated soil horizon only contained pottery of Roman date. Within the trench further back from the street frontage all excavated deposits contained medieval pottery. In addition to the soil horizons this trench also encountered a large medieval pit and evidence for a late medieval building, in the form of a sequence of floor surfaces. These floors are likely to represent an ancillary building related to a property on the main medieval street frontage along Micklegate to the southeast. Given the location of the site there is the potential for earlier, especially Roman, structures to be present at a greater depth.
