A watching brief on ground works in preparation for garden landscaping was undertaken by York Archaeological Trust on behalf of Lizzie Tulip Landscape and Garden Designs between 30th May and 9th June 2022 at Theatre Royal. This was covered by an Operations Notice. No in situ archaeology was identified during the works. Deposits seen in two sections likely represent a series of made ground and levelling deposits associated with previous landscaping works in the garden. Any finds identified were residual. Whilst the area has a significant historical background as the site of the medieval hospital, it is likely any archaeological evidence has been removed in subsequent area development or exist at a further depth.
