Description

A watching brief on emergency sewer repair works was undertaken by York Archaeological Trust on behalf of Yorkshire Water on the 29th January 2021 at Aldwark. The ground within the extent of the trench appeared to have been entirely disturbed as the result of modern and 19th century service instillation. No definite in-situ archaeological deposits were observed. However, a small assemblage of artefacts, including clay tobacco pipe, plain tile, glazed medieval pottery, animal bone and cattle horn core were recovered. It was clear from the observed works that archaeological deposits in this part of Aldwark have been significantly truncated by modern activity.
