Description
An archaeological evaluation was carried out by On-site Archaeology Ltd, on Behalf of City of York Council, on the 24th and 25th November 2006. The evaluation comprised the hand excavation of a single trench 2.80m long, 1.50m wide and a maximum of 1.25m deep. All of the deposits excavated dated to the late 18th century or later and included dumps and surfaces. The earliest deposit excavated displayed good organic preservation, suggesting that significant, earlier waterlogged deposits are likely to be present on the site at greater depths. Any such deposits may date from the Roman to Post-medieval periods. Approximately half of the trench was occupied by a recent iron tank, possibly for fuel, upon which a brick manhole had been built.
