Description

The first 1.4m BGL of deposit sequence consisted of modern made ground and levelling deposits, of which no archaeology has survived, by either being heavily truncated or fully removed. This probably relates to the numerous repairs and building phases that have been carried out at on Aldwark in the both the 20th and 21st centuries, if not before. The work was undertaken for Sapphire Utility Solutions to facilitate the repair of an ineffective sewer pipe. The works involved the monitoring and recording of a rectangular trench, 4.90m in length, 1.80 in width and 4.30m in depth. Despite this heavy intrusion some potential archaeology was discovered in the form of a compacted gravel surface. Approximately 1.9m BGL a compacted surface of small pebbles, gravel and sand was encountered and interpreted as a probable road or path surface.
