Description
The DBA was undertaken in August and September 2022. The assessment establishes the known cultural heritage resource within and around the Site to inform proposed redevelopment at the site. The Mount Royale Hotel is a Grade II listed building, of medium heritage interest/value. The findspot of a Bronze Age socketed axe is the only evidence of prehistoric activity in the Site’s immediate vicinity. The main archaeological potential for the site is for Roman funerary remains and features associated with the post-medieval Civil War sconce. The potential for the presence of such remains is considered to be moderate, rising to high in areas that have had minimal previous ground disturbance.
