Description

Watching briefs were maintained during perculation test pit excavations in Masonic Garden to the rear of 23 High Petergate in 2023 and during subsequent works to install new drainage in 2024. The percolation hole measured 0.9m by 0.7m and was hand excavated to a depth of 0.3m. No archaeological cut features or finds earlier than 18th or 19th century date were detected. The 2024 watching brief observed ground reduction in the garden area for attenuation and planter bases, and excavation for new draiage connections in the basement of 23 High Petergate. Post-medieval levelling deposits and a posible 19th century mortar floor were observed and recorded.
