Description
Two of the three proposed trenches were excavated at Hospital Fields Road and Ordnance Lane.
Trench 1 was not excavated due to the presence of services and the lack of a suitable spot for relocation within the accessible area. Trench 2 contained a single east-west aligned brick wall and two sets of two concrete beams or walls. A single linear ditch feature was investigated in this trench, which is likely to be of medieval date even though it contained residual Roman finds.
Trench 3 was located in the car park area at the corner of Ordnance Lane and Hospital Fields Road. It contained a single red brick wall with concrete foundations, two cement encased drains, an east to west aligned ditch, as well as a circular pit.
