Description
Works comprised four trenches, which were excavated along the proposed route of an access road for the New Garden Village housing development at Land to the West of Wigginton Road. The fieldwork followed an earlier evaluation programme conducted by York Archaeological Trust in 2014, on land immediately to the east.
Three of the four trenches contained features, with a total of thirteen features being present, excluding modern field drains. Most of the features were linear features (ditches and gullies), with a smaller number of pits. Dating evidence indicated activity on the site during the Roman period, as well as medieval and later periods. This included Early Roman and Middle to Later Roman activity and, as such, reflects the findings of the earlier trial trench evaluation. However, the earlier material on this site appeared to be residual in later features and in one instance, Roman pottery was found in a modern drain cut. Although the majority of features cannot currently be dated, it is feasible that at least some represent activity during the Roman period. On present evidence, it is difficult to sufficiently characterise the nature of the activity on this site although it can be interpreted as linked to the use of the land to the west.
