Description

An archaeological watching brief was undertaken by On-Site Archaeology at 46-48 Bootham, York between February 2020 and March 2021, during the conversion of offices to residential use and the construction of additional residential properties. The majority of groundworks only revealed thick deposits of medieval to post-medieval horticultural soils, which have been shown through numerous archaeological investigations to be present in this area of the city. In one small trench these deposits were seen to overlie an area of rough surfacing. Pottery recovered from this surface suggests that it is of Roman date. A cobble and clay feature glimpsed along the Marygate frontage may also represent structural remains, although this was predominantly beyond the limits of excavation making any interpretation difficult.
