Description

Building recording ahead of proposed demolition. The buildings are often assumed to have been associated with a former mid-19th century Military Hospital which was in use until 1975 and was demolished in the late 20th century, and part of the Royal Army Ordnance Corps Depot. 1-4 Ordnance Lane was built between 1892 and 1909 replacing former structures of at least mid-19th century date immediately along the west edge of Fulford Road. This building was originally designed as a semi-detached property although it was subsequently divided into four flats. Building number 5-8 and 9-10 were erected between the production of the 1909 and 1931 Ordnance Survey maps. 5-8 was also originally built as a semi-detached property for two separate families, although it was later altered into four flats. Building number 9-10 on the contrary, appears to have been designed as a single property presumably for higher ranking personnel, although possibly as part of the Royal Army Ordnance Corps Depot rather than the hospital. 11-12 Ordnance Lane appears to have been built in the late 20th century as Council offices. Internally, the ranges have been substantially altered from their original design as later refurbishments and the introduction of modern equipment have contributed to the loss of primary fixtures and fittings.
