Description
Between the 15th August and the 23rd September 2022, York Archaeology conducted a strip, map and record investigation and two watching briefs at Clifton Ings, York, prior to the improvement of the flood defences in this location. One portion of watching brief also included a metal detector survey undertaken prior to excavation.
The work was undertaken for BAM Nuttall and the Environment Agency to fulfil a planning condition.
The area of the northern Barrier Bank extension, which was under SMR conditions, did not reveal any archaeological remains although a number of agricultural furrows aligned northeastsouthwest were observed, as well as several ceramic field drains.
The southern Barrier Bank extension was under watching brief conditions as well as a metal detector survey condition. No archaeological features were discovered in this area.
The habitat creation area, located to the west of the northern Barrier Bank extension, also did not contain any archaeological features.
