Description

An archaeological evaluation was carried out by On-Site-Archaeology Ltd at land off New Lane, Huntington, York. The evaluation comprised the excavation of 16 trenches, which were positioned to test the results of a previous geophysical survey of the site. The trenching revealed a limited number of archaeological features. The majority of the potential archaeological features highlighted by the geophysical survey proved to be of natural origin or represented land drains. The earliest feature detected during the evaluation was a ditch probably dated to the Roman period. This ditch was located on the western side of the site and contained a single pottery sherd and probable imbrex tile fragment. Features dated to between the 16th and 18th centuries were concentrated within the eastern part of the site and comprised of a linear field boundary, drainage ditches and pits. The field boundary suggests a different earlier post-medieval layout of the agricultural landscape than is seen at present.
