Description

A watching brief on ground works for the conversion of a house into two duplex apartments at basement and ground floor levels was undertaken by York Archaeology between October and November 2022. The monitoring of the removal of the revetment wall, which was found to be Victorian, revealed archaeological deposits which included post-medieval rubble. This was interpreted as being related to the construction of the house in c. 1835 – 1840s. During the monitoring of the works within the basement, no archaeological deposits or features were observed. This is likely to be due to the excavated depth of the basement below the original ground level. Any archaeological remains originally present are likely to have been removed during this process.
