Description

A Level 1 photographic survey was carried out by On-Site Archaeology Ltd at 24 Coney Street, York. The photographic survey was undertaken prior to agreed alterations and was carried out to satisfy a planning condition. The building is a Grade II Listed Building (List Entry Number 1257981). The listing description identifies the building as originating as a house, dating from the early 17th century, now a shop, and including remodelling in the 18th and 19th centuries and further 20th century alterations. During agreed pre-determination opening up works evidence of potentially earlier timber-framing has been revealed on the first and second floors, and the photographic recording was to concentrate on these . This photographic survey has allowed a record to be made of exposed structural timbers within the first and second floors. This confirms the complex history of the building and its origins as a timber-framed house. Of particular interest on the first floor are a series of carpenter’s marks on floor joists.
