Description

The investigation comprised the archaeological excavation of a single trench, located within the footprint of the proposed new dwelling. The evaluation trench was initially mechanically excavated to a safe working depth of 1m below the modern ground surface. At this depth a thick deposit of medieval to early modern agricultural/horticultural soil was still present. Hand excavated sondages indicated that the natural lay a further 0.20m below the base of the trench. The proposed new dwelling is to be constructed on a raft foundation, the formation level for which will be well above the level of the natural, into which any archaeological features, if present, will be cut. The construction of the foundation raft for the new dwelling will not, therefore, impact upon any potential archaeological features.
