Description

The investigation comprised the archaeological monitoring of the excavation of a single small trench to inform the project structural engineer about potential ground conditions and the depth of the existing basement walls. The trench was excavated to a maximum depth of 0.65m below the existing basement brick floor. Immediately below the floor was a rubble make up layer. This sealed the remains of an earlier brick basement floor. Limited excavation beneath this earlier floor revealed another rubble make up deposit. Pottery of late 18th to 19th century date was noted to be present within both of the make up deposits.
