Description

Archaeological monitoring and recording during demolition and groundworks associated with the reconstruction of a garden wall at the rear of 4 Driffield Terrace. The largely negative result of this programme of monitoring and recording might not appear to offer much to our understanding of the important and extensive Roman funerary landscape and communication routes known to be nearby. However, what has been observed may elucidate on the south-eastern extent of the Driffield Terrace cemetery, and perhaps reveal something as to the location of Road 10. No hint of in situ burials was found to extend into the excavation area, suggesting that the southeastern extent of the cemetery lies a little to the north-west of the area investigated, the cemetery perhaps limited to the slightly higher ground closer to Driffield Terrace.
