Description

The A1036, Tadcaster Road, closely follows the line of the main Roman south-western approach road to York and numerous archaeological sites have been identified on or close to the modern road. Areas of high, medium and low potential impact on archaeological deposits were identified along the route of the scheme, allowing for a suitable level of archaeological monitoring to be conducted depending on the archaeological potential and probable impact of the groundworks carried out. Excavation carried out in and immediately adjacent to Tadcaster Road exposed earlier road surfaces in four places: Mount Vale, Ainsty Grove, Dringhouses and near The Square. Few dateable finds were recovered however it is likely that the former road surfaces encountered cover dates ranging from the Roman period through to the early 20th century. The work along Mount Vale led to the recovery of fragments of disarticulated human bone that are likely to originate from a Romano-British cemetery excavated at Trentholme Drive by L P Wenham in the 1950s, and the neighbouring Newington Place excavated by York Archaeological Trust in 2017.
